The hooks on the sidewalls of bicycle rims came about as a way to center the tire around the rim while the tire was being inflated. They were initially developed as a way to hold road tires on the rims when inflating them to higher pressures.
Benefits of hookless mountain bike carbon rims:
1) Hookless design, precise dimensions run tubeless system perfectly
2) Double triangle structure, make MTB rims stronger with high tire pressure
3) Bead kock design for all mtb rims, keep the tire bead position on the rims shelf when air released, more safety if tire is leaking when riding
Through our development program we discovered that by removing the hook we could produce a rim and tire combination that performed better that rims with hook beads. We feel that the hookless system gives us a performance advantage. The tire shape that results is more stable and gives the rider a wheel that corners better and will not burp. On a hookless rim the carbon fiber is allowed to flow continuously over the bead area to improve impact resistance.Without the hook, we were also able to thicken the rim wall, making it even stronger. Finally, using a hookless rim simplifies the manufacturing process and leads to a more consistent carbon compaction - a technical way to say this leads to a stronger rim.
Hookless rim walls are both smoother and straighter than hooked beads. This means that the tire will touch rim walls fully and mounted perfectly, allowing you to run lower tire pressure without risk of air loss or pinch flats.
Tire Pressure Notes for Hookless Rims:
The hookless version is designed with low pressure impact resistance in mind and the maximum recommended tire pressure for our hookless rims is 80psi. If you are planning on running a tire with more than 80psi, one of our Road, Cyclocross, or Gravel carbon rims with a hooked bead would be a better choice.
